When the mud cleaner handles the weighted drilling fluid, the drilling fluid which is already handled enters into drilling fluid system from the over fall of the swirler. The drill cuttings, barite and a little liquid phase discharged from the under set and go to the highly detail screen. Because of the granularity of barite is 2~74um mostly, it will return to the drilling fluid system with the liquid phase and the drill cuttings which are smaller than the sieve mesh, the drill cuttings which are larger than the sieve mesh will be discharged from screen surface. In this way, mud cleaner cleans the drilling fluid, stabilizes the performance of drilling fluid and recycles the barite and the liquid phase.


Mud cleaner is consist of manifold, shale shaker,desander and desilter. First the drilling fluids are sucked up to 0.25Mpa ~ 0.4Mpa by centrifugal pump, and enter into the cones through the side inlet which is normally only 2-1/2″ diameter. The fluids then flow spirally inside of the cone. Effected by the centrifugal force, the heavy solids in the fluids would be throwed towards the inner wall of the cones, go down to the bottem, and discharge through the sand discharge port, while the light fluids would go up and discharge through the upper oulet. The diameter of the bottom discharge port is adjustable, and with a cover of hydrocyclone.

Drilling Mud Desander

The desander is an important part of the mining and drilling process. This simple euipment helps filter out grainy solids from drilling liquid.
Brightway drilling mud desander is used as the 2nd stage of solids control for drilling mud, which makes separations between 45 and 76 μm.

Operational Details of Solids Control Equipment Part 1

It is quite essential to normally operate any solids control system or equipment in oil & gas drilling. 1. Weak capacity of solids control equipment:
It should be taken into consideration how much the fluids can be injected into mud tank according to equipment’s actual capacity and how much the flow rate is in mud agitator in order to guarantee the quality of processing the fluids.

2. Return of the rough solids removed by shaker screen in mud cleaner:

If the degasser is placed behind the equipment supplied by centrifugal pump, the pump can be blocked by entraining gases. Entrained fluids will reduce its flow rate and working efficiency of hydraulic cyclones. If the gases are poisonous, it is better to remove them in the first mud tank rather than the third or the fourth one.

Desander & Desilter in Solid Control System

As two indispensable equipments in the solid control system of oil & gas drilling, desander & desilter are responsible for separating the small solids in the drilling fluids which has been treated by the shale shaker & vacuum degasser. The desander takes care of the solid with diameter 45~74μm, and 15~44μm for desilter.

Normally desanders are mounted on the top of the first mud tank together with shale shakers & vacuum degassers, while desilters are mounted together with centrifuges. Sometimes to save the top area of the mud tank, desander & desilter are combined together to work as high efficient mud cleaner.  Desanders & desilters are consist of hydrocyclones, high pressure flow pipes & a small shale shaer at the bottom. For desanders & desilters, only one vibration motor is used to drive the screen basket. while for high efficient it would need two motors. There would equiped two 10″ or 12″ diameter iron hydrocyclones for desander just as the solids need to be separated is relatively big, and include some sands in the mud. While for desilters, it would equiped 6 to 12 pcs 4″ diameter hydrocyclones which are made of wear resist plastic.


Working Principle of the hydrocyclones.

Reasons and Solutions for Hydrocyclone Sand Up

Bottom sand up: causes of underflow sand up is unproper adjustment, causing dry bottom discharge, and sand content is too high, resulting in hydrocyclones overload. Method to exclude bottom sand up is turning up the underflow; let the previous solids control equipment to remove more solid. Bottom sand up will affect its purification ability, accelerate the wear lining and vortex tube, so once found should be removed immediately.

The inlet pipe sand up: inlet pipe sand up can be divided into local sand up and all sand up, local sand up, into the fluid velocity in the oral cavity becomes low, the hydrocyclone only plays the role of vortex funnel, large leakage in drilling fluid underflow. Sometimes the underflow is mixed with the clean drilling fluid overflow pipe in the back. The inlet pipe all sand up, there can be a lot of clean drilling fluid flows down from the overflow pipe.

The inlet pipe causes sand up is because drilling mud system is not strict. If the drilling fluid doesn’t go through shale shaker, or the shaker screen of shale shaker is damaged, most likely cause the inlet pipe sand up.
